Black SUV traveling from Midway Airport toward downtown Chicago

Midway Airport to Downtown Chicago transportation is available by CTA Orange Line, taxi, rideshare, rental car and prearranged private vehicle. Midway is closer to the Loop than O’Hare in mileage, but the best option still depends on the hotel address, traffic, luggage, group size and time of arrival.

Midway to Downtown Options Compared

Option Strength Consider
CTA Orange Line Economical direct rail to the Loop Not a 24-hour train; walking or transfer may remain
Taxi On-demand door-to-door ride Meter and traffic affect total
Rideshare App booking and direct route Use designated lower-level zones
Prearranged car Confirmed itinerary and vehicle Book in advance and provide flight details
Rental car Useful for wider regional driving Downtown parking and traffic

CTA Orange Line From Midway

CTA’s Orange Line connects Midway with the downtown Loop. CTA lists normal travel time at approximately 20–25 minutes, excluding the enclosed walk from the terminal, wait time and the final connection to the hotel. The train operates daily but not throughout the entire overnight period, so check the current schedule.

The station is east of the terminal and connected by an enclosed walkway. Follow airport signs for CTA trains.

Taxi and Rideshare Pickup

Rideshare loading is currently designated on the lower level outside baggage claim near Doors 2–4, with the app identifying the appropriate zone. Taxis use airport-designated loading. Follow signs, verify the vehicle and avoid crossing active traffic lanes outside marked pedestrian routes.

Prearranged Midway Transportation

For a scheduled car, provide the operating airline and flight number, passenger phone, luggage and complete downtown address. Follow the provider’s current pickup message rather than assuming that the personal-vehicle or rideshare area applies.

Downtown Is Not One Address

The Loop, River North, Streeterville, West Loop and South Loop are all commonly described as downtown. Send the hotel or building’s complete street address and correct entrance. A convention attendee going to McCormick Place may need a different route from a traveler staying near the Magnificent Mile.

Late-Night Arrivals

Because Orange Line rail is not continuous overnight, check the exact schedule before relying on it for a late arrival. Taxi, rideshare or prearranged transportation may be alternatives. If a flight delay changes the arrival into an overnight period, reevaluate the plan rather than assuming the original option remains available.

Families, Groups and Luggage

Count every suitcase, stroller, wheelchair and oversized item. A small group may fit a sedan or SUV, while a larger party may need a shuttle van. Keeping everyone in one vehicle can simplify coordination, but multiple downtown destinations may make separate cars more efficient.
